Portuguese side Porto has today confirmed that they have agreed the sale of their player Fabio Vieira to Arsenal. They provided details of the financials behind the deal. The transfer is going to cost Arsenal €40m, £34m. The bulk of this £30m is fixed, and additional £4m in player and club’s performance. The deal is for 5 years. Arsenal is yet to comment.
The player has agreed personal terms and is said to be in London today undergoing his medical. This is likely to take until end of Saturday or Sunday, after which it is expected that the club will announce him as an Arsenal player.
This deal came as a shock to many. Sports writers and the club’s fans were not aware of this deal. I’m sure many fans went straight to You Tube to view clips of the players. It will be interesting to see Arteta’s formation for next season. Vieira’s signature could enable the team to play 4-3-3 formation, or the 4-2-3-1 formation used last season.
Fabio Vieira is unlikely to be the last player that will sign for Arsenal in this transfer window. Arsenal is in talks with Manchester City for the signature of Gabriel Jesus. According to Sky Sports Arsenal have offer around £30m, but Manchester City value the player at £50m even through he has only one year left on his contract. The Guardian report that Arsenal still expect to sign Tielemans from Leicester City for a fee of £25m. The rumours of Arsenal’s pursuit of Bologna’s full back Aaron Hickey have not gone away. It is possible that he could also join the club before the start of the season. This will take the club’s spending to over £100m and close to £300m in two seasons.
