Arsenal football club has today confirmed the signing of Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City on long term contract for a few believed to be around £45m.
Arsenal’s attempts to sign the player began before the transfer window officially opened. The discussions between Arsenal and Manchester City has been on-going for some time. City were thought to be asking for fee of over £50m, but Arsenal are reputed to have made opening offer of only £30m. It was always expected that Arsenal would improve their offer and have done sufficiently to tempt Manchester City to sell their player.
The player will be the teams number one striker, a role he coveted at Manchester City after the departure of Aguero. For parts of last season he was played wide. The addition of Erling Haaland made those ambitions of been number one even more remote, leaving the player little option but to find himself a new club.
Mikel Arteta knows Jesus from time as Pep Guardiola’s assistant. The departure of Aubameyang in January and Lacazette at the end of the season on a free means that Jesus’s ambitions of been the number striker will be realised at Arsenal.
The medical took place last week and fans had been waiting for official announcement from the club, even though some images were leaked of the player in an Arsenal shirt on the Emirates pitch.
Mikel Arteta believes that Gabriel Jesus will “set different standards at the club” after arriving from Manchester City. The Arsenal further commented on Arsenal.com that “I think the club has done a tremendous job to recruit a player of this stature,” the manager said. “It’s somebody that I know personally really well, and we all know really well because he’s played in the league and been really successful.
“It’s a position that’s been on our radar for a long time now and we have managed to get a player that we all wanted, so I’m really happy.”
The player told Arsenal.com that he followed Arsenal when he was young because of Thierry Henry.
The club has now got it’s number one target. Arsenal are still expected to sign a couple of players. Lisandro Martínez is one that Arsenal seem particularly keen to sign. They may also sign another midfielder.
